McConnell Dowell – North Melbourne Railway Station Upgrade

The North Melbourne Railway Station is a strategic hub for passengers to interchange from trains from all areas of Melbourne and country Victoria and is currently used by about two million people annually. It needed to be upgraded to cater for increased volumes. Works included a new station building, a new concourse, connecting a new entrance to all six platforms via lifts, escalators and stairs.

McConnell Dowell developed an approach on the project that allowed construction works to continue safely above active train lines and platforms. A temporary canopy structure was developed, which completely isolates the work face from commuters and train operations below.
