Wednesday 30th November, 2011

The Aveng Group today, announced the appointment of Dr Rob Adam to bolster its leadership within the burgeoning power sector. Having identified the power value chain as a strategic area for growth, leading infrastructure group, Aveng is well positioned to capitalise on the global demand for power. This includes new capabilities in more environmentally-friendly renewable solutions such as wind energy, as well as alternative solutions such as geothermal and nuclear power. With government starting to roll out its energy infrastructure build programme through to 2030, South Africa is a key target market.

Dr Adam, who will join the Aveng Group on 1 February 2012, has a long and distinguished history in academia, the policy arena, and more recently, the nuclear industry. He will join Aveng from the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA), where he has been widely recognised for turning around the organisation during his six-year tenure as CEO. His achievements include the establishment of a globally competitive manufacturing division at NECSA, as well as the establishment of skills development and apprenticeship centres, where hundreds of artisans are trained and tested annually for the broader manufacturing sector, and trebling the NECSA Group turnover during his tenure.

Prior to this he was Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology. He is the President of the Nuclear Industry Association of South Africa, and chairs the steering committee for the South African bid to host the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope. He is an extraordinary professor of physics at both the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Commenting on the appointment, CEO of the Aveng Group, Roger Jardine said: “Rob’s appointment comes at a very important time for the infrastructure sector and the Aveng Group. With significant investments targeted at the power sector, both in SA and our other key markets over the next 20 years, Rob brings extensive experience in helping us drive our offer in this high growth area.”

“The potential for localisation of key areas of the supply chain, local manufacturing, skills development and job creation is immense. This appointment will help us to address the aims of the National Planning Commission’s National Development Plan in driving employment creation in the sector.”

Roger Jardine added: “Rob is an extraordinary intellect with a stellar history in the technology field. He brings an array of scientific skills that will help drive value creation in the company as we go forwards. We are proud to welcome him to the Aveng Group.”
