Aveng Mining has been awarded a safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) integrated management system (IMS) certification from globally recognised SGS, a multinational company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and accredited as the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company.
An integrated management system is a key enabler for Aveng Mining to identify all key SHEQ risks and to ensure that baseline risk assessments for all mining and engineering activities are complete and streamlined. The system allows Aveng Mining’s management team to create one integrated system that assists to effectively and efficiently deliver on its SHEQ objectives on a single training and development platform. It also plays a key role in driving business continuity objectives across all Aveng Mining operations.
Trevor Nair, Aveng Mining’s SHERQ Director, explains: “The system increases efficiency and effectiveness, and reduces costs by minimising the disruption caused by several external audits. It also demonstrates our commitment to enhanced performance, employee and customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement within our internal control systems. The IMS facilitates management systems and controls without compromising or complicating accountability with operational site SHEQ programmes.”
Further, the SHEQ IMS creates a combined SHEQ management learning database and maintains all SHEQ best practices in an embedded process that is key to preventing reoccurrences of high risk consequence events at project sites.
Aveng Mining’s key intent in implementing a certified SHEQ IMS is to set a safety benchmark that sets it apart from its competitors and to position itself as the contractor of choice due to its stringent standards.
“The implementation of the system will also meet compliance requirements for the draft ISO 45001:2016 standard, ensuring that Aveng Mining remains compliant with global mining safety standards,” adds Nair.
Commenting on the certification, Aveng Mining’s Managing Director, Stuart White, said: “We are pleased to have achieved this globally recognised SHEQ certification as it endorses Aveng Mining as one of the pioneers in ensuring best practices.”
Aveng Mining initiated the development of the system in July 2015 and reached full development by the end of 2016. In August 2016, Aveng Mining implemented a gap audit to test the system on selected sites in preparation for certification and the system was certified on 2 May 2017. The fully-fledged implementation of the system across the Aveng Mining business is due to take place in early 2018.
